Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Taxation is seeking a highly motivated Field Auditor to support the Tobacco Tax Unit. This position is responsible for conducting tobacco tax compliance audits, inspections, and investigations to ensure proper reporting and payment of all applicable tobacco and cigarette taxes. The Field Auditor helps protect state revenue by identifying noncompliance, researching tobacco product distribution channels, and supporting enforcement and policy initiatives.


In this role, you will…

• Conduct audits of licensed Virginia Stamping Agents and tobacco product distributors
• Conduct retail site inspections
• Perform assigned Distributor ST‑10C audits
• Research and identify sources of tobacco and cigarette products entering Virginia to ensure appropriate taxes are paid
• Perform compliance inspections related to cigarette and OTP tax laws, including verification of sales exemption processes
• Prepare professional audit work papers that clearly support findings, assessments, or potential litigation
• Provide timely written and verbal updates to management regarding tobacco tax trends, compliance issues, and audit progress
• Conduct follow‑up contacts with potential unregistered OTP distributors identified through inspections or other sources
• Participate in special projects such as joint enforcement initiatives with federal, state, and local partners, online compliance testing, and policy/legislative research
• Stay current on accounting/auditing standards and issues affecting tobacco industries
• Provide input on the potential impacts of proposed tobacco tax legislation



High-speed Internet connection (preferably not Satellite) is REQUIRED with a Download speed of 2 MB or higher and an Upload speed of 1 MB or higher. (See testing requirements under special instructions)

Location: This role will be home based in the Eastern region of Virginia.

The hiring range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000, commensurate with experience, knowledge and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Knowledge of corporate structure/tax planning or experience preparing Federal or state corporate income tax returns (preferably Virginia)

Knowledge of accounting, auditing, state and federal tax laws, rules and regulations

Proficiency with Microsoft office software as well as electronic data & files

Must have own transportation available to travel to audits throughout the geographical coverage area

Have a quiet, safe and private home-based work office/space (subject to inspection) with high-speed Internet (not wireless) & locking file cabinet.

Must hold a valid US Driver's License

Strong verbal and written communication skills using professional grammar and formatting

Ability to analyze and reconcile financial and operational data to assess tax liabilities and payments

 

 

Additional Considerations

 

Experience working in the field independently and in a home-based environment with minimal supervision

Prior experience conducting tobacco‑related audits or inspections

Experience working with tax administration systems or audit software

Experience collaborating with law‑enforcement or regulatory partners

Professional experience with accounting and audit terminology, techniques, and formal theory of accounting

Professional experience in preparing and/or reviewing Federal and State Corporation income tax return

Advanced knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as accounting, auditing, finance, or other related fields
